Until Tomorrow
“Hold on, baby, hold on through the night, I'll be prayin' by the kitchen light”
Yeah... this for the ones the world forgot.
Grandmama used to say the night always lie to you.
Tell you it's forever. It ain't.
I was born in a town where the bay meet the sky
Saw the rich man lie while the poor man cry
Every corner got a story, every story got a scar
Every mama on her knees, every daddy behind bars
And the pain don't change, it's the same cold rain
Same young brothers in the system, same shackles, same chains
Same mama workin' doubles, only Jesus know her strain
Same cop rollin' slow 'cause my color's in the frame
And I'm tryin' to explain to a world that's insane
That a child ain't born with a needle in his vein
We was babies, we was dreamers 'fore the streets knew our name
So who's to blame? Lord, I'm askin', who's to blame?
'Cause they built us a cage and they called it a city
Then they came on the news with they faces full of pity
But I ain't askin' for your pity, I'm just askin' you to look
'Cause the truth is on the block, it ain't written in your book
Hold on, baby, hold on through the night (Hold on, hold on!)
I'll be prayin' by the kitchen light (Hold on, hold on!)
They can lock up every door in this town
But they can't lock heaven, can't keep heaven down
Until tomorrow, oh Lord, until tomorrow
We gon' make it through the sorrow, until tomorrow
Now I ain't no angel, I done sinned and I done bled
Said my prayers with a bottle sittin' right beside my bed
Am I wicked 'cause I smoke, or just tired of the war?
'Cause the Lord I know don't lock His door on the poor
And I see it in the skies, I can see it in they eyes
Every child that they despise gon' be the one to rise
No disguise, no more lies, ain't no more compromise
When the meek take the prize, all the kings gon' realize
That you can't kill a dream with a badge or a dollar
Can't silence a mama when she lift her voice and holler
I seen my grandmama feed the whole block with one pot
And that's more holy than anything the rich got
So to my young souls up at four in the cold
With a heart full of holes and a story untold
Hear the choir in the distance, let it carry you home
On my grandmama's name, you was never alone
Hold on, baby, hold on through the night (Hold on, hold on!)
I'll be prayin' by the kitchen light (Hold on, hold on!)
They can lock up every door in this town
But they can't lock heaven, can't keep heaven down
Until tomorrow, until tomorrow
We gon' make it through the sorrow, until tomorrow
One day they gon' study these years.
Wonder how we made it.
I'ma tell 'em... we prayed, we bled,
and we kept on livin'.
Until tomorrow.
Hold on, baby...
Until tomorrow.
Hold on...
till tomorrow.
